Soy facts

What is soy wax?

We hear the term “made from 100% soy wax” a lot when it comes to candles, but a lot of people still ask us what really does this mean? Soy wax is made from the oil of soy beans, meaning it is a vegetable wax and is completely natural and environmentally friendly. If a soy candle is made well, the benefits of soy wax goes on:

  • Firstly, it is non-toxic unlike paraffin wax which is a bi-product of petroleum. Paraffin wax can leave a black soot that blackens candle holders, walls etc.
  • Soy wax candles burn slower, cleaner and cooler than other paraffin wax candles. Meaning you get to enjoy the long life of a candle – they are known to last up to three times longer than a paraffin wax candle!
  • The wax is completely renewable and biodegradable, a solution to pollution!
  • A soy candle holds fragrance well. As it has a slower and longer burning time, soy candles will release fragrances gradually and not in a quick wave. This eliminates strong and sickly scents that some candles can produce when they are first lit.

Why is your candle showing puddles of oil on top?

You may notice sometimes you find your soy wax candle with puddles of what looks like water on the top. This is completely normal, and is called soy ‘sweats’. Because a soy wax candle has a lower melting point, this can cause the candle to melt slightly if it is kept in a warm spot. Therefore, for best performance it’s best to keep a soy candle out of direct sunlight and in a cooler spot. Soy sweats can be easily removed with a cloth and will generally not return after the candle is lit for the first time. This doesn’t affect the candles burning quality in any way.

Why does there appear to be wet spots inside my candle container?

This is another completely normal characteristic of soy wax candles. What it may look like is that there is air inside the container or that the wax hasn't made contact with the glass - what we call a 'wet spot'. This is one of the main complaints that us candle makers have and cannot fix! This again doesn't affect the performance of your candle in anyway.
